Abstract

Countess Emilia Pardo Bazán (1851-1921) was one of the most influential and controversial Spanish writers and literary critics of the nineteenth century. The only female writer mentioned by Arthur Symons in his ‘Decadent Movement in Literature’ (1893), she is primarily known for introducing French Naturalism into Spanish literature at a moment when Naturalism was seen as little less than a sin.
